Eeli Tolvanen has Todd McLellan sitting in the middle of Detroit's next wing decision.

David Pagnotta linking Tolvanen to the Red Wings matters because the Patrick Kane picture still looks shaky. Detroit is still waiting on a clean answer there, and that keeps the search alive.

That is where Tolvanen makes sense. He is 27, shoots left, and still brings enough finish to help a top 9 without needing star money or a long contract.

His 2025-26 season with Seattle was not explosive, but it was useful. Tolvanen scored 12 goals and added 24 assists for 36 points in 78 games.

The year before that, he hit 23 goals in 81 games. That matters because Detroit would not be buying a one-year fluke. It would be betting on a player who has already shown he can give secondary scoring.

And the Red Wings still need that. Detroit finished 41-31-10 with 92 points and missed again, so this is not a roster that can shrug off losing 57 points if Kane really stays out.

Tolvanen would not replace Kane's playmaking, but he could replace part of the shooting threat at a younger age and with less drama around the file. That is an inference from their recent production profiles.

" David Pagnotta: Re Red Wings: With Patrick Kane out...presumably out, they're looking to replace that piece; I do wonder about an Eeli Tolvanen - Leafs Morning Take (7/10) "

Red Wings reportedly have Dylan Larkin's replacement and fans won't believe who it is

McLellan is not building around style points here. He needs wingers who can help the lineup breathe and keep the top six from leaning too hard on Alex DeBrincat and Dylan Larkin every night. That is an inference from Detroit's roster shape and team scoring profile.

Tolvanen fits because he does not need to be the answer. He only needs to be a useful piece who can score enough to keep Detroit from chasing the same missing offense all season.

There is also upside in the fit. Seattle gave Tolvanen 16:03 a game last season, the highest average ice time of his NHL career, so there is still room to believe another team could pull a little more out of him.

That makes him more interesting than a pure depth add. He is still in the age range where a bump can happen, especially if a coach sees a cleaner role for him than the one he had with the Kraken.

Detroit should still be careful on price. Tolvanen is a solid target, not a star swing, and the Red Wings cannot keep paying like every missing piece is a franchise fix.

But Pagnotta's link makes hockey sense for a reason. If Patrick Kane is really out, Eeli Tolvanen looks like the kind of winger Detroit should be around before the market gets any thinner.
