Despite having a whopping five point-per-game players, including 16 points in nine games from Cale Makar, 15 from Nathan Mackinnon, 14 from Mikko Rantanen (who is of course performing superbly well in his contract year), 12 from trade acquisition from the Buffalo Sabres Casey Mittelstadt, and nine from trade acquisition from the Tampa Bay Lightning, Ross Colton, the Colorado Avalanche are barely treading above .500 due to their goaltending. While rookie Justus Annunen is doing everything he can to keep the team afloat, quickly becoming their de-facto starter, giving him such a big workload is risky. Alexandar Georgiev, who was acquired from the New York Rangers at the 2022 NHL entry draft, has a .810 save percentage and a 4.99 goals against average in five starts this season - truly unacceptable.
Now, with the Pittsburgh Penguins having made the surprising decision to send former starting goaltender Tristan Jarry to the AHL, there are calls for the Colorado Avalanche to do the same with Alexandar Georgiev.
The Colorado Avalanche claimed Kaapo Kahkonen off waivers from the Winnipeg Jets two weeks ago, and, with him having put up a .923 save percentage in a brief start with the New Jersey Devils last season, he is clearly capable of an NHL job.
Writer Sean McKenna of Mile High Sticking has highlighted the upside to sending Georgiev down to the Colorado Eagles of the AHL, allowing him to find his game without the spotlight of the AHL:
With Alexandar Georgiev starting for the Colorado Avalanche tonight, we will see if he can get it back together, or if it will be the last straw.
