Controversial Tony DeAngelo Returns to the NHL, Signs With Metro Division Team
It was announced today that controversial defenseman Tony DeAngelo has returned to the NHL, signing with the New York Islanders.
Tony DeAngelo, who signed with SKA St. Petersburg for this season, but had his ties with the team cut last week mysteriously.
He has come under fire in his time in the NHL for fights with teammates, accused of disrespect and bigotry.
He has now signed with the Islanders, marking his fifth NHL team, including the Arizona Coyotes, New York Rangers, Carolina Hurricanes, and Philadelphia Flyers.
We will see if he can get over his character issues and thrive on Long Island, as former top defenseman Noah Dobson has struggled offensively.
It has equally been confirmed that Tony DeAngelo will need to be placed on waivers, due to his status coming from an overseas league.
With St. Petersburg, he put up a stellar 32 points in 34 games, and was slated to attend the KHL all-star game until last week (he will be replaced by Montreal Canadiens prospect Ivan Demidov).
While he is certainly gifted offensively, his character issues will make it very unlikely that he will be claimed by another NHL team. His $775,000 league minimum (pro-rated) salary is appealing, especially considering no assets will need to go the other way.
We will find out DeAngelo's fate tomorrow at 2PM, but all indications suggest he will be finishing this season in blue and orange.
