A former player of the New Jersey Devils and the Detroit Red Wings has decided to call it a career after playing the last few seasons overseas in Europe.

A veteran NHLer who has played the last several years overseas in Europe has retired from professional hockey. His Swiss National League team, EHC Biel, for whom he skated this season, made the announcement.

Damien Brunner played for both the Devils and Red Wings

A native of Zurich, Damien Brunner managed just six games for EHC Biel this season, due to injury and didn't record a point. He played the final seven seasons of his career with the club.

Damien Brunner has decided to end his career as an elite athlete with immediate effect.

- EHC Biel-Bienne

Brunner has played two seasons with the New Jersey Devils of the NHL, scoring 13 goals and 32 points in 77 games.

His time with the Devils came to an end early in the 2014-15 season, as he and the team mutually agreed to terminate his contract after he had cleared both regular and unconditional waivers.

Brunner signed on with HC Lugano of the Swiss League shortly thereafter, signing a five-year contract.

In 121 regular-season NHL games with the Detroit Red Wings and Devils, Brunner scored 25 goals and added 58 points.

Brunner's journey to the NHL was marked by an unfortunate twist of fate. He left Swiss team Zug for the NHL just before the club reached its peak. Had he stayed, he would have likely won a championship with them.

In any case, we wish Brunner all the very best in his future endeavors and he regardless still left his mark in the NHL.
