Connor McDavid will dress tonight for the Edmonton Oilers, even if the ankle that's been bothering him all series doesn't quite say yes.

The captain is officially a game-time decision. Everything points to McDavid being in the lineup tonight when the puck drops on an elimination Game 5 against Anaheim. The Ducks lead this series 3-1.

Nobody in that locker room thinks he's at 100 percent.

The ankle has been an issue since early in this round. Watching him push off in the corners has been a different story than watching him in February.

The numbers still tell their own version. McDavid has 4 points in 4 games at a -6 rating.

The 29-year-old captain still posted 138 regular season points. He plays hurt better than most stars play healthy.

Anaheim has hung 6, 7, and 4 on Edmonton in the last three games. The 4 came in overtime on a puck that barely crossed the line. The Ducks have outscored the Oilers 17-13 in this series.

Joel Quenneville's group has done it without a single offensive star carrying the load. They've spread it across four lines while Edmonton's depth has gone missing.

Why Knoblauch has no choice but to play him

Kris Knoblauch isn't sitting his $12.5 million captain in an elimination game. Not even a hint of a chance. The Edmonton coach knows what's at stake.

Leon Draisaitl has been the one keeping Edmonton breathing. He leads the Oilers with 7 points in 4 games.

McDavid at 80 percent beside that line is still a top-five problem in hockey.

Evan Bouchard sits at -6 in the series. Zach Hyman has 1 point and a -5. The depth signed to support the two stars has not shown up.

The goaltending picture is grim. Connor Ingram owns Edmonton's only series win with a .849 save percentage across 3 games. Tristan Jarry got pulled in his lone start.

Stan Bowman handed Draisaitl a $14 million extension last summer.

The general manager built around firepower and is now watching that firepower bleed defensively in late April.

Why does an 80 percent McDavid still matter tonight? Because a healthy second pair on Anaheim still can't match speed with him on the rush. One half step is enough to score.

The Oilers finished 41-30-11 with 93 points and second in their division. They came in expecting a long run. They got a series their captain can't fully sprint through.

If Edmonton wins tonight, the conversation flips to whether McDavid plays Game 6 in Anaheim or rests.

If they lose, the offseason starts with questions about a window that just slammed shut on a sore ankle.
